Symptoms
There’s a reason that menopause is sometimes referred to as the “change” as you’re likely to go through this transition at the same time that many other changes are occurring in your life. If you have children they are no doubt making plans to leave home or have already done so, or you could be looking your grandchildren. You may have left work and find yourself spending more time with your partner and reducing time with friends or you could find yourself single and looking for new love. If you have elderly parents who need care, you may find yourself spending more time caring for them. So, no doubt you will be juggling multiple new roles. And remember when the menopause occurs as you are growing older, which brings its own age-related changes. It’s a stressful time, to say the least.

All of this can factor into how you experience menopause and the long phase that precedes it, perimenopause. Although changes in your periods are caused by fluctuations in hormones, other symptoms, such as hot flushes and sleep disturbances, likely result from a combination of factors, including life stress, anxiety, and aging.
Every woman will experience the menopause in a different way, some women breeze through the transition with minimal symptoms, whilst other find the change overwhelming and life changing. In addition, symptoms can vary with time so some women may find that their hot flushes and sweats improve and then develop other symptoms such as low mood, anxiety and fatigue. Symptoms usually last for many years.
