Benefits of cheese during the menopause

Cheese can prevent osteoporosis it is rich in calcium and women for obvious reasons need a lot more calcium than men to maintain strong bones - in fact, the older a woman gets, the more relevant it is to eat cheese.  Cheese not only protects the body’s bones but is also vital for good dental health.

The richest four cheeses in calcium are probably: Parmesan, Romano, Gruyere and Goat’s cheese. Brie, Blue, Brick, Camembert,Feta, Colby, Cheddar and Edam are also high in calcium.

The richest four cheeses in protein are probably: Parmesan, Edam, Gouda, and Swiss Cheese. Pecorino, Blue, Camembert, Feta, Brie and Cottage Cheese are also high on the list.

Cheese is a trusting friend of the menopause and cheese has been around for a long time; it may have a ‘fatty’ reputation but the body needs fat - and cheese is such a good source of both protein and calcium and also contains a small amount of Vitamin D. If concerned about cholesterol - then eat a sensible proportion and eat it with foods high in fibre.

Remember cheese is a key nutrient for the menopause!  Research indicates a little bit of cheese can lower the risk of diabetes and also a stroke - be sure to put it on your shopping list.
