ABOUT THE MENOPAUSE 

What you need to know 

Menopause is the result of natural, age-related changes in the hormonal cycle

that causes menstruation.  Hormones are chemical messengers that help control the activity of cells and organs. Menstruation is regulated by several hormones that communicate with one another. It is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycles as your ovaries no longer produce eggs and produce less amount of female hormones, called estrogen and progesterone, which help regulate your monthly periods.   

Understandably you will no doubt be focused on how to get through the menopausal transition itself, but it’s also important to think now about the future. The female hormone estrogen exerts many healthy effects in the body; once it subsides, you face increased risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, and other health challenges. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to get

through “the change” in the best shape possible, with some lifestyle changes that become habits.

Menopause Stages

Perimenopause

Perimenopause describes the years leading up to menopause. During this time period, hormones are still present, but their levels fluctuate erratically.

Menopause

Menopause is the day after a woman's final period. Doctors consider menopause complete if a woman has not had a period for at least a year.

Postmenopause

The term postmenopause is used for the years following menopause, and is a time when women are more at risk to health problems such as osteoporosis.

Symptoms

The symptoms that women have during perimenopause and menopause vary greatly, an element of the severity  will be down to genetics.  Some women breeze through with hardly any effects, whilst others struggle for a decade, but there's a lot of support and changes you can make to address specific symptoms, particularly with food choices.
